The Portuguese Association of People with Trisomy 21 (APPT21), founded in 1990, provides specialized medical, neurodevelopmental/educational and social care to people with trisomy 21 (a genetic disease also wrongly known as Down's syndrome or mongolism).
Objective
To create clinical services for adults with trisomy 21, especially medical services, in order to better respond to the challenges posed to this population by ageing and the highly prevalent Alzheimer's disease.
Over the next few years, the institution intends to set up clinical services for adults with trisomy 21, mainly medical, in order to better respond to the challenges posed to this population by ageing and the highly prevalent Alzheimer's disease. To achieve this goal, we need your help. We really appreciate your solidarity.
On October 1, 1990, the Portuguese Association of Trisomy 21 Carriers (APPT21) was founded and the first strategic options were to provide care for children affected by this genetic disease. Shortly afterwards, at the beginning of the 1990s, the association introduced the most modern assessment and intervention methodologies in Portugal in the area of development related to this pathology and, less than two years later, it was decided to generalize the experience to diseases other than Trisomy 21, so the institution began to provide specific Intervention Programs for other diseases that are comorbid with Intellectual Developmental Disorder. From 1995 onwards, in a progressive, systematic and coherent way, and in a strong technical-scientific connection with the Development Unit of the Pediatrics Department at Santa Maria Hospital, the association began to provide specific care for children and adolescents with other neurodevelopmental disorders.
The association is organized into five sectors: the Neurodevelopment Sector; the Genetics and Neuropediatrics Sector; the Mental Health and Behaviour Sector (Psychiatry; Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology); the Social Sector; and the Adult Medicine Sector. The diversity and quality of the services provided has made it one of the most creative and advanced Development Centres in Europe, integrating professionals from a wide range of backgrounds and training, such as neurodevelopmental paediatricians, psychiatrists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, neuropediatricians, public health doctors, epidemiologists, educational psychologists, clinical psychologists, specialist teachers, specialist educators, special education and rehabilitation technicians and speech therapists.
The DIFFERENÇAS Child Development Center, so named since January 2004, is an autonomous unit of APPT21 and, in addition to carrying out Neurodevelopment Consultations, it promotes the administration of the most modern assessment methodologies, the formulation of diagnoses and the implementation of specific Intervention Programs for Child Neurodevelopment Disorders, most of them with a markedly social slant.
